Yao Chong:Regard Non-Greed as A Treasure,Make Integrity as Your Teacher
Yao Chong's political career exemplified not only outstanding administrative talent but also unwavering integrity. Despite being at the pinnacle of power, he always adhered to the supreme principle of "Valuing non-greed as a treasure," living a life of extreme frugality and refraining from any financial entanglements, maintaining a clean and self-disciplined lifestyle, and dedicating himself to public service. During the Kaiyuan period, his family's circumstances remained modest. His refusal to accept gray income even forced him to reside in a remote suburb, as he could not afford a house in the capital. Yao Chong’s impartiality extended to his family. When the Minister of Personnel Wei Zhigu evaluated the performance of officials, Yao Chong refused to seek personal benefits for his son. When Emperor Xuanzong considered promoting his son, Yao Chong frankly stated that his son's talents were average and not sufficient for promotion, displaying his impartiality and dedication to fairness. Yao Chong's integrity was not only reflected in his personal conduct but also in his political wisdom and belief in serving the people. During the Kaiyuan era, he proposed a series of suggestions for governing the country, including opposing the abuse of punitive power, advocating governance rooted in benevolence and righteousness, stabilizing society, opposing militaristic aggression, and prohibiting eunuchs from interfering in court affairs. He also focused on selecting talents, streamlining institutions, curbing the excessive power of the nobility, and promoting the economic development. These measures laid the groundwork for the "Kaiyuan Prosperity," a period of political stability and economic flourishing.
