悬鱼太守

羊续是东汉时期著名的清官，他为官清正廉洁、生活简朴。在担任南阳太守期间，羊续的清廉事迹广为流传，特别是“悬鱼拒贿”的故事，成为他廉洁自律的典型代表。

有一次，羊续的府丞焦俭看到他生活清苦，便送给他一条当地有名的白河鲤鱼。羊续多次推辞，但焦俭坚持要他收下。羊续无奈收下鱼后，并没有食用，而是将鱼悬挂在屋外的柱子上。过了一段时间，焦俭又送来一条更大的鲤鱼，羊续便带他到柱子前，指着已经风干的鱼说：“你上次送的鱼还挂着，请你一起拿回去吧。”焦俭感到非常羞愧，悄悄地把鱼收回去了。这件事情传开后，人们都称赞羊续的清廉，并称他为“悬鱼太守”。

羊续不仅对下属如此，对自己的家人也一样坚持原则。他的妻子和儿子曾远道而来探望他，羊续却只让他们看了自己简朴的生活环境，告诉他们自己没有多余的财物可以供养他们，劝说他们返回家乡。

羊续的清廉不仅体现在拒绝贿赂上，还体现在他的日常生活中。他穿着破旧的衣服，吃着粗劣的食物，使用破旧的马车和瘦弱的马匹，以此抵制当时权贵之家的奢侈之风。他的这些行为，赢得了百姓的尊敬和爱戴，成为了历史上清官的典范。

The Fish-Hanging Prefect

Yang Xu was a renowned honest official during the Eastern Han Dynasty, known for his integrity and simplicity in life. During his tenure as the Prefect of Nanyang, Yang Xu’s reputation for incorruptibility was widely spread, particularly the story of “Hanging Fish to Reject Bribes,” which became a typical example of his self-discipline and honesty.

Once, Jiao Jian, the Assistant Prefect of Yang Xu’s office, seeing how austere his life was, gave him a famous Baihe carp from the local area. Yang Xu repeatedly refused, but Jiao Jian insisted that he accept it. Reluctantly taking the fish, Yang Xu did not consume it but hung it on a pillar outside his house. After some time, Jiao Jian came again with an even bigger carp. Yang Xu led him to the pillar and, pointing at the already dried-up fish, said, “The fish you gave me last time is still hanging here. Please take it back along with this one.” Feeling deeply ashamed, Jiao Jian quietly took both fish back. When this became widely known, people praised Yang Xu for his incorruptibility and called him the “Fish-Hanging Prefect.”

Yang Xu was as principled with his subordinates as he was with his own family. When his wife and son journeyed from afar to see him, he only allowed them to witness his austere living conditions, informing them that he possessed no surplus wealth to provide for them, and urged them to return to their homeland.

His incorruptibility was not just a matter of turning down bribes; it was also evident in his everyday life. Clad in worn-out garments, consuming simple fare, and traveling in a rickety carriage drawn by a lean horse, he stood in stark contrast to the opulence of the aristocracy of his era. These actions garnered him the reverence and affection of the populace, cementing his legacy as an exemplar of an upright official throughout history.
