On December 21, 2024, which is the 21st day of the eleventh lunar month, we welcome the Winter Solstice, the 22nd solar term among the twenty-four solar terms. It heralds the arrival of the longest night and the shortest day of the year.

The Winter Solstice encompasses both natural and cultural connotations. It is not only a significant solar term among the twenty-four but also a traditional Chinese folk festival. There is a saying that "The Winter Solstice is as important as the New Year." On this day, people engage in various celebratory activities. For example, they eat traditional delicacies like dumplings and glutinous rice balls, symbolizing reunion and warmth. They also hold ancestor worship and praying ceremonies to express their remembrance of ancestors and yearning for a beautiful life.

Furthermore, the Winter Solstice holds great significance in health preservation. The ancients believed that it is the time when yin reaches its peak and yang begins to emerge. Thus, one should pay attention to keeping warm and conditioning the body to adapt to the yin-yang changes in nature.

The Winter Solstice is not merely a change of solar terms but also a warm manifestation of the traditional culture of the Chinese nation.

习俗

Eat dumplings

In northern China, there is a custom of eating dumplings on the Winter solstice, which is related to the ancient famous doctor Zhang Zhongjing. According to legend, when Zhang Zhongjing was an official in Changsha, he saw that people were suffering from frostbite due to the cold, so he asked his disciples to cook soup with mutton, chili and other cold medicine on the day of the winter Solstice, and gave these materials into ear-shaped dumplings to the people to eat, in order to keep warm. In addition, there is a saying in the north that "eating dumplings during the winter solstice does not freeze ears", which means to keep warm and strengthen physical strength.

Eat tangyuan

In the south, there is the custom of eating tangyuan during winter solstice. Tangyuan is a round dessert made of glutinous rice flour, symbolizing reunion and integrity, and symbolizing people's yearning and pursuit of a better life. In addition, some parts of the southern coastal areas continue the traditional custom of ancestor worship, every family will put the ancestor image, memorial plate, etc. in the upper room of the home, set up incense burners, offerings, etc., to show memory and admiration.

Ancestor worship

Ancestor worship during the winter Solstice is an extremely important part of the Chinese tradition. The winter solstice ceremony of ancestor worship is often solemn and sacred. Before the sacrifice, people will prepare sacrifices in advance, such as pork, chicken, fish, tofu, incense, paper money and other sacrificial articles. During the sacrifice, people will set up an altar at home or in front of the ancestral grave, place the offerings neatly, light joss sticks, burn paper money, and pray to the ancestors for peace, health and happiness. In the process of sacrifice, people will also recite the names and deeds of their ancestors to show their memory and respect.
