Self-discipline Comes Before Children's Education
After the founding of People's Republic of China, Xie Juezai served as minister of the Interior Ministry, president of the Supreme People's Court and vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Despite his high position, Xie never considered himself a privileged person. Instead, he strictly demanded his spouse, children and relatives to behave themselves in order to establishgood family traditions.
As a senior party cadre, he always regarded himself as a servant of the masses and an ordinary party member. He never asked for any privilege, and was even more strict with his children and relatives. He often admonished his children: "I am a party member, and you are the children of a communist. Do not have privileged-seeking mindsets."
It was one of the characteristics of Xie Juezai's family traditions that none of his children was allowed to be specially treated. During the period of Yan'an, his children once went to the canteen to play, and when it was dinnertime, the administrator proposed to make special food for them. Xie Juezai firmly opposed this and immediately asked his children to go home and instructed them not to go there to receive special favor. During his tenure as president of the Supreme People's Court, Xie was given a car for his work. Once, by chance, he found that his children used the car for private reasons. He was very angry and said to them, "the car given by the state is used only for working. You have no right to ask the driver to drive my car out for you." Xie told his family to pay the fare, and also made a self-criticism in a party meeting.
Xie Juezai lived a very frugal life. He wore his clothes and shoes for more than a decade. Whenever his family wanted to buy him new clothes and make him delicious food, he always said, "We are already well fed and clothed, and anything better would be excessive." In addition, he often taught his children to develop the habit of living in a hard, simple, diligent and thrifty way. In the 1960s, Xie's family was crowded, and thus the childrenwere constantly asking for a new house. In response, Xie wrote a letter to his children: "One thing must be clarified: this house is excellent. You should stop complaining about just some minor flaws.” He mentioned that "Some people live in one small room with their families; some people in rural areas cannot have oil for a year; with only 4 taels of oil available, residents in Beijing can hardly buy eggs and meat." By doing so, he intended to admonish his children that "We must look at the past and think about others. Work always comes before enjoyment. We should feel uneasy instead of dissatisfied for living such a life as the broad masses are still in a very difficult situation."
