Dear Douglas,

I'm thrilled to receive your letter! I used to be one of those countless “Li Huas” in English writing assignments. Back then, writing letters was just homework, but I quietly longed to explore the world beyond words. I never imagined that years later, I’d meet you on the social media platform RedNote. It was the first time I truly felt such a deep bond across countries.

I'm doing great here in China. Various interesting things have been happening lately. For example, there's a growing trend of people rediscovering traditional Chinese culture. Many young people are learning traditional handicrafts like paper-cutting and sharing their work on social media. It's so interesting to see the blend of old traditions with modern technology.

Your daily life in America sounds quite cozy. Going to the gym is a great way to stay fit, and I can almost picture you sweating it out and then relaxing in front of the TV after a delicious dinner. Here in China, people also have diverse daily routines. Some old people love going to the local parks for morning exercises like tai chi, while others enjoy playing chess.

If you're interested, I'd love to tell you more about China and its culture. I'm also looking forward to hearing more about your life, your hobbies, and anything else you'd like to share.

Best wishes,

Li Hua

Dear Friend Douglas,

I hope this letter finds you well.

Recently, the influx of TikTok refugees onto RedNote has brought us closer than ever before. Although we are well aware that our beautiful encounter may be like two intersecting lines—briefly meeting only to part ways for a long time—we still choose to revel in the warm glow of this global unity.

At the turn of the millennium, we embraced the concept of a "global village," believing that the internet would connect people from all corners of the world and gradually dissolve the cultural barriers and prejudices between us. Alas, progress has proven slow and winding. We often struggle to transcend our limitations, finding ourselves caught in endless disputes. Yet this brief gathering has reminded us that we are not monsters to each other, but rather living beings, warm and lovable in our own ways.

At this very moment, wars, hunger, poverty, and oppression still plague our planet. All these misfortunes stem from the fact that we have forgotten that we are all human beings, who should love and care for one another.

One day, I believe we will come together as one—like water merging seamlessly with water.

Wishing you all the best!

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

Hello from China!

I feel so amazed to receive your reply to the letter I sent three years ago. I still remember sharing my first day of high school with you. It is hard to believe that a letter from the past has now become the bond between us.

In fact, what I want to share with you is far more than what was written in the letter. I believe your post on Rednote is more of an opportunity for in-depth mutual understanding than just an online sharing activity. Seeing you and your American friends reading our letters, speaking mandarin, and learning about Chinese culture truly moves me. I believe this exemplifies the saying, “if we respect and treasure other's cultures and values, the world will be a harmonious one (美美与共,天下大同).”

I hope that in the future, not only between China and the United States, but also around the world, people can sincerely understand and communicate with each other without prejudices.

Last but not least, I warmly welcome you to visit China and wish you all the happiness in the world!

Your friend,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

Cordial greetings from the vibrant heart of China!

I am simply overjoyed to have your letter in my hands—a testament to the enduring power of correspondence. It’s a delightful twist of fate that your words have reached me finally as I stand on the cusp of adulthood, bridging the gap between our youthful dreams and the promise of new shared experiences.

I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit China, one as rich in sentiment as it is in substance. China is so much more than just a country; it’s a mosaic of cultures, histories, and landscapes waiting to be explored. I would be honored to guide you through the streets that echo with stories, to share meals that are a symphony of flavors, and to exchange ideas under the vast canopy of our night sky.

Our friendship, I believe, is a beacon that shines beyond the boundaries of time and space. It’s an opportunity to embrace the profound truth that we are more alike than different, to celebrate the diversity that enriches our world, and to create a bond that is as timeless as it is precious.

I look forward to the day when we can usher in this journey together, hand in hand, and let the world witness the beauty of our friendship. Until that day, know that you hold a place in my heart and in the land that I call home.

Your friend,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

Thank you so much for your reply!

I have never expected that the wishes from my childhood would actually be answered. Your handwritten letter has such lovely penmanship and reminds me of the time when I was a child, painstakingly learning to write each stroke. It feels as if those letters I wrote in my childhood had been placed into a message bottle by my teacher, drifting across the Pacific Ocean for over a decade, only to finally reach you. When I received your reply, my eyes instantly grew moist, both from nostalgia for the bygone days and from the joy of this long-awaited connection.

Douglas, there’s a line from an ancient Chinese poem that goes, “May we live long and share the beauty of the moon together, though miles apart (但愿人长久,千里共婵娟).” Although we have never met, we can look up at the same sky and share the same breath and destiny. If there is a chance, I would be more than happy to show you the beautiful moonlit nights in China.

Yours lovingly,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

Hello!

This bright and sunny morning, your letter arrived, and I felt as cheerful as the birds chirping outside my window. This correspondence, carrying years of our friendship, has traversed the long corridor of time and finally reached me. Though I've grown from a child full of dreams into an adult, I'm still brimming with excitement and anticipation as I pen this genuine invitation for you to explore my country and my hometown.

I hope you’ll have the chance to set foot on this land and experience the local culture and daily life. Let's breathe in the fresh air together, savor the authentic cuisine, and listen to the captivating tales.

I believe that after being pen pals for so many years, our hearts remain connected—through the past, the present, and the future. No matter how the world changes, true friendship is always the most precious gift.

May your life always be full of sunshine, and may each of your days be filled with hope.

I look forward to the day we meet!

Dear Douglas,

You mentioned being unable to respond to my letter promptly. Please don't worry about it; it's perfectly fine. After all, none of my previous letters ever reached their intended destination, so I'm genuinely grateful for your reply.

With the Spring Festival just around the corner in China, people are wrapping up a year of hard work and heading home to reunite with their close-knit families.

After enduring intense final exams as an undergraduate, I'm elated to be back home in Wenzhou, relishing consecutive sunny days that are even warmer than those in Hangzhou. With life settling into a peaceful and relaxing rhythm, I’ve been spending my days reading, listening to music, journaling, savoring delicious food, and sleeping soundly. Please let me share with you some lyrics from a song that resonate with me: "Throughout life, joys and sorrows ebb and flow; with memories, a plenty to fill each hollow."

My pen name, “Li Hua,” is not just a part of my past, but an epitome of countless Chinese students who strive for their dreams. Writing this letter feels like a dialogue with my younger self across time and space. Memories, like paper planes, have traveled across the years and landed in my hands.

Although I'm still Li Hua, my old letters written on exam papers are long gone, and I no longer have to rack my brains to craft elaborate rhetoric just for exams. As I write this letter, I’ve come to appreciate that this—this heartfelt connection—is the true meaning and purpose of education. My letter will no longer be scanned by a cold machine or graded as an assignment. This time, I know it is being received by a living, breathing, and a warm-hearted person.

Thank you for this letter that has transcended time and space, giving a response to my youth.

Your friend,

Li Hua

My dear friend Douglas,

Hello from China!

It's been such a surreal experience to receive your letter—a message that has traveled across time and space to reach me. I remember the days I wrote to you as a child, filled with dreams and curiosity about your world. Now, as an adult, reading your heartfelt words, I feel a deep sense of connection.

Thank you for kindly inviting me to your beautiful country and hometown, where I can imagine the warmth and sincerity that awaits me, free from the noise of politics and prejudices. Your words have reminded me of the true essence of friendship—a bond that transcends borders and endures the test of time.

I hope we can meet in person soon, whether it's in your hometown or mine. Until then, please take care and keep in touch.

All the best,

Your friend, Li Hua

My dear friend Douglas,

I was very surprised to receive your reply. I think I should be grateful to this rapidly developing Internet era, which has made it possible for me—someone who wrote under the name of Li Hua in countless examination rooms—to receive this incredible reply, crossing both time and geographical barriers. Back then, I was 14 or 15 years old, full of aspirations for the future, fantasizing that I could become a remarkable person. Now, I am a sophomore student. Although my life may seem a little ordinary, and I have not become the so-called "hero" once I envisioned, I am still very satisfied.

In your letter, you described your daily life. It makes me feel that we are not distant—you truly exist. There is an invisible force that connects us, and I think this force is probably the feeling of youth. We often say that one cannot have youth and the feeling of youth at the same time, but at this moment, I have really experienced both. The memories of those teenage years hit me right in the heart—they are so vivid.

Best wishes to you and your family!

Your friend,

Li Hua

Dear American Friend,

Hi there!

I have been writing to you for the past few years, but unfortunately, I hadn’t received a reply—until today! Through your letter, I learned that your life on the other side of the ocean is wonderful, which brings me a sense of comfort and joy.

Your reply felt like a time machine transporting me back to my childhood. I could see my younger self again: a little girl full of dreams for the future, imagining traveling the world, picturing your life on the other side of the ocean, and constantly confiding in you about my life here.

As time passed, those aspirations gradually faded into the river of time. However, your reply reminded me that I was once that little girl full of fantasies and dreams.

The years have come and gone—we have both grown up—but I am grateful to finally receive your letter today. At this moment, it feels as if we are talking face-to-face, like old friends who have known each other for years. Our hearts are connected, and many of my hopes have finally come true.

To be honest, you are a memory that runs through my entire youth. I hope that as time goes on, things will only get better for both of us.

Let’s keep writing to each other!

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear friend,

I'm thrilled to finally receive a reply to my high school exam letters as "Li Hua"! It's like our youthful paper airplanes have returned, bringing back warm memories.

Now, I'm a sophomore majoring in Translation at ZISU. Life here is a mix of academic challenges and peaceful moments. I enjoy engaging in my courses and relaxing on the campus lawns with friendly cats. Beyond my studies, I volunteer in the community, helping at charity events and assisting international students. These experiences have enriched my life and broadened my horizons.

Hope we can meet someday and share a big hug.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

I am glad to hear from you! I never thought that the letters I wrote a few years ago would one day receive such a touching reply. This is the warmest moment of early 2025, and the way globalization connects us makes me reflect on the letters I once wrote.

Now, as a sophomore student in college, I still want to sincerely invite you to visit China, just as I did when I was in middle school. This time, I’d especially like to invite you to visit my hometown, Fujian.

Fujian boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and mouthwatering cuisine. From ancient earth buildings to bustling metropolises, from serene beaches to majestic mountain ranges, every corner of Fujian exudes a unique charm. Here, we could wander through the alleys of Gulangyu Island, soaking in its tranquility and beauty; we could also climb Wuyi Mountain, taking in the breathtaking scenery of rolling mountains and misty peaks. I will take you to taste the most authentic local snacks, leaving you with unforgettable flavors.

Looking forward to meeting you in person someday!

Best wishes,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

After all these years, I finally received your reply—it feels as thrilling as a dream come true. It’s like our childhood paper airplanes have flown back, evoking a wave of nostalgia. I remember vividly writing you letters as Li Hua, a part of my youth. Now, as an adult, your reply fills me with indescribable excitement.

College life hasn’t been as magnificent as I once imagined, but it has been full of ordinary moments that make it truly meaningful. I’ve come to understand that everyone's life has its own unique rhythm and purpose.

I sincerely invite you to China and explore its rich history, breathtaking scenery, and vibrant culture. I’m excited to share these experiences with you.

Thank you again for your reply—it reminds me of the timeless power of our friendship.

Looking forward to your next reply.

Best regards,

My dear foreign friend,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I'm absolutely thrilled to have received your heartfelt letters—it feels like an incredible moment that takes me back to my teenage years.

Receiving your reply has brought forgotten memories to life in such an extraordinary way. I remember how I used to—and even got tired of—writing letter after letter as “Li Hua,” without ever receiving a response. I introduced Chinese cuisine and invited you to experience the magnificent landscapes of China. The writing of a teenage girl was full of naivety, and I never expected that one day, I would actually receive replies from across the world.

Your response, so genuine and warm, feels like it has bridged time and space. In the past, I thought those letters were just ordinary assignments, but now they bring tears to my eyes, and the concept of the “global village” feels more tangible and meaningful than ever before.

Your letter is a precious gift that I'll cherish forever. I sincerely hope our friendship will continue to blossom, transcending time and distance. Just as the 2008 Beijing Olympics theme song goes, "You and me, heart to heart, living in one global village." Let's keep sharing our dreams, stories, and laughter.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

My dear friend Douglas,

Upon receiving your reply, I was overwhelmed with joy and deep emotion. Three years ago, as I penned those letters, the thought of receiving a reply at the age of eighteen was beyond my wildest imagination.

You might be wondering why I haven’t written to you in the past six months. The truth is, I’ve now entered university, and there’s no longer an assignment requiring me to write you a letter.

Nevertheless, your heartfelt reply has made me realize that our friendship—and the bond between our two peoples—should stand the test of time. Lately, on RedNote, it has become quite common to see foreign friends and Chinese people engaging in vibrant cultural exchanges, eagerly sharing the splendid cultures of their respective countries and the nuances of their daily lives. It got me thinking: even though we may not write letters as often as before, in this era of globalization, we can still overcome the barriers of culture, race, and politics through various means.

We should seek common ground while respecting our differences, engage in amicable exchanges, and work hand in hand. In doing so, we can better understand the essence of friendship and build a stronger sense of unity.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

Greetings from the heart of China!

I am overjoyed to receive your letter. Your response feels like a time capsule—both a reminder of the past and a bridge to the present.

Exploring my country and culture through RedNote is such a unique way to connect, and I am grateful for your interest in experiencing what I see and think, even if it's through a screen. Now you can see my favorite dish, the sweet and sour pork cutlets known as "guobaorou," the vibrant night markets bustling with life, and even the adorable Chinese cats! I am eager to share more with you—not just virtually. I sincerely hope that one day you’ll set foot on this land, breathe the same air, and feel the warmth of its people firsthand.

In this fast-paced world where differences often overshadow our similarities, it's refreshing to remember the simple yet profound value of friendship. I believe that by sharing our experiences and perspectives, we can learn from each other and grow together.

Wishing you all the happiness and success in your life.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear friend,

I heard that you've finally received my letters. I imagine the stationery must carry the scent of the moisture from across the Pacific Ocean.

I once wrote to you about dreams, the sky, and the ocean. Although I am on this side of the ocean, I never imagined that I would one day receive a reply from you.

Now that I've grown up, I'm no longer just one of the countless “Li Hua”s. However, I still want to use this name to correspond with you. This winter, destiny has given us the opportunity to communicate, and everything feels so dreamy and wonderful. On RedNote, we’ve admired the lovely cats and dogs from different countries. We’ve broken the long-standing stereotypes about each other. By removing invisible walls, we’ve come to realize that, in truth, there are no real fences in this world.

I believe this is more than just an activity of exchanging letters. It is our hearts and souls that have traversed the distance of time and space and become closely intertwined. As I write this, tears well up in my eyes. Together, we have planted the seed of a dream for a global village, waiting for it to sprout in spring.

Finally, I’ll end with the same familiar words: Looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Douglas,

I am so glad and thrilled that you have received my letter. Though it has been more than half a year since I last wrote to you, our connection and friendship never fade.

As you may know, one of the most important traditional festivals in China—the Spring Festival—is around the corner. In 2024, the Spring Festival was successfully granted World Heritage status, which has therefore attracted lots of attention from curious foreigners, including yours, I hope.

I sincerely invite you to take a tour of China and dive into the rich atmosphere of the Chinese New Year. Participating in various activities is enjoyable as well as meaningful, ranging from writing Spring Festival couplets, setting off firecrackers to praying at temples. You may also get red packets!

In the new year, the Milky Way is bright and everything is within reach. Let us wish that everyone can find their own ferry crossing, with mountains high, seas wide, and flowers blooming all the way. Although my letter comes to an end, our bond is only the beginning.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

My dear friend,

I hope this letter finds you well.

Although we have never met, I felt very close to you when I received the letter from you. The letters I wrote to you have accompanied me throughout my school days, and I am pleased that you were able to read these letters and reply. Your reply feels like a boomerang, bringing me back to the past and reconnecting me with cherished memories I shared with you.

The Spring Festival, one of China’s most important traditional festivals, is approaching. I am very glad to invite you to come to China and experience the vibrant festival atmosphere with us. I would also love to take you to experience the charm of Chinese traditional culture and taste the delicious cuisine as I mentioned in my previous letters.

May your days be filled with joy and success! Looking forward to continuing our communication.

Your forever friend,

Lihua
