A Lifetime of Integrity,

A Model for All Generations

Fan Qian successively held the positions of Prefect of Yuyang, Governor of Yongzhou, Governor of Henan, and other regional posts, making him a high-ranking official with significant territorial responsibilities. Later, he entered the court and served as the Minister of the Masses, ranking among the “Three Excellencies,” the highest officials in the country. The Minister of the Masses oversaw the country’s land and wealth, a lucrative post in the eyes of corrupt officials. However, Fan Qian, who remained incorruptible throughout his life, even as the Minister of the Masses, retained only a few acres of residential land and one hectare of farmland inherited from his ancestors. The Fan family was large, with many members. Due to the scarcity of farmland and meager income, his nephew lived in poverty. Therefore, Fan Qian gave away the only hectare of farmland he owned to his nephew.

Why did Fan Qian do this? It wasn’t because he was wealthy. Quite the opposite, he was poor and lived an austere life without extra money to support his nephew. His wife constantly said to him, “We have four sons. Because of our poverty, the children don’t even have any farmland or a house. They have no place to settle down. You should save your salary and use it as a family inheritance for our future generations.” However, Fan Qian replied, “As a minister of the court, if I accumulate property and seek personal gain for myself, how can I set an example for the country’s future generations?”

Upon his death at the beginning of the eighth year of the Yongping reign, his family had no extra money and less than one dan (a measure of grain) left. The family couldn’t even afford a coffin, and the emperor specially approved for the funeral arrangements to be handled by the Da Si Nong Fu (the office in charge of national finance) at public expense. As a high-ranking official, Fan Qian was noble, untainted, and impeccably honest, setting a standard that future generations could only aspire to.
